News and Announcements
VICTORIA, BC – Field Hockey Canada is pleased to host the U21 Chilean National team for six games in Victoria from June 29 to July 6. The Canadian Women’s Junior National Team (JWNT) is excited to have their first set of international competition after what will be a vigorous few weeks of camps and ahead of a busy summer competition schedule in the early build up to the 2022 Junior World Cup.
A 24-member roster was declared for the summer training that includes a two-week camp at the artificial pitch and grounds of Shawnigan Lake School in Shawnigan Lake, B.C., June 11-24, the Chile Series in Victoria, June 29-July 6 and a 6-Nations tournament in Antwerp, Belgium from July 9-22. A narrowed-down roster has been selected for both the Chile series and Belgium-hosted tournament.
“With UVic now the designated training centre for the Canadian field hockey program, it is exciting for the junior women’s national team to have their first international series in Victoria,” said Shiaz Virjee, head coach of the JWNT. “The JWNT had a hugely successful camp at UVIC and are excited to play and host the series against Chile. The new JWNT group is excited and wants to follow the successful trail blazing by the WNT this year.”
Virjee led the UBC Thunderbirds men’s field hockey program for 13 seasons and prior to that was the Canadian men’s national team coach for seven years. He led Canada during the 1998 World Cup and helped the Canadians win gold at the 1999 Pan American Games, which garnered the team their spot at the 2000 Olympic Games.
Three juniors named to the team will get a rare opportunity to play on home turf during the Chile series including Cowichan defender Sara Goodman and Victoria defenders Alexis DeArmond and Anna Mollenhauer.
Goodman, alongside Ontario’s Samantha McCrory will be fresh off senior international competition as they were named to the senior list that competed and won the Hockey Series Open in Mexico on June 5-10. McCrory scored six goals in her debut for Canada and was the team’s top goal scorer in her first international tournament.
Hannah Eborall, Margaret Pham, Jordyn Faiczak and Thora Rae, as well as Goodman, are all current UBC Thunderbirds players who will provide a lot of the experience to the squad. The team is a good blend from West to East as Ontario is well represented with the talents of Anna Constanzo, Dani Husar, Katie Lynes, Mackenzie Janzen and Frankie St. Louis being named.

2018 UNDER 15/U18 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION
Each year, all Field Hockey clubs in BC are invited to attend Field Hockey BC’s (FHBC) Club Festivals and Championships. These are hosted in different locations and offer an excellent opportunity for participants to travel with a team and play against other clubs from around the province. FHBC organizes a Club Championship for the U15 age-group.
Club Festival Format:
At this level, the event is a championship format (round robin, playoffs, medals) playing 11 a-side on a full field. Both the U15 age group (birth years 2004, 2003) and U18 (birth years 2000, 2001, 2002) format aligns with the stage of learning as outlined in Field Hockey Canada’s Long Term Hockey Development Program.
• Team Size – 15 players
• The schedule and number of games at the Festival has yet to be finalize
• Travel day may be moved to Friday due to tournament schedule
Club Championship General Information:

Regions across the province will be sending teams to participate in the Championship, offering an additional opportunity to their Spring League experience with several games over a two-day period. It is a highlight for the athletes, offering excellent competition, lots of fun, and team bonding.
Player Eligibility and Assessment Process:
Preference may be given to Victoria Junior Field Hockey Association participants who hold a FHCB Membership.
Non VJFHA individuals interested in playing are required to pay a $30 fee in addition to the player fee (see next section) to cover extra costs covered by the association – tournament registration and assessment turf costs.
Player Cost and Responsibilities:
Although this tournament is an additional opportunity outside the regular league season the Victoria Junior Field Hockey Association is committed to supporting the teams by covering: turf costs for assessments, and the FHBC team entry fee.
All participants will be responsible for their own transportation (vehicle/ferry), accommodation and meal costs. In addition, each participant will be required to pay a Club Festival player fee of $75-$100 to cover additional team costs, including but not limited to:
o Practice turf fee (three 1-hour sessions)
o Travelling umpire and non-parent coach travel subsidies
o Team shirt/jersey (kept by participants after the tournament)
o Team socks (if applicable)
o Team snacks and incidentals
These fees are due in full at the first Club Festival training session, payable by cheque to “Victoria Junior Field Hockey Association”.
To ensure fairness, the number of practice sessions will be equal. The Association is committed to support three 1-hour practice times for each club festival/championship team. To minimize additional costs it is expected that teams share turf time. In some cases, it will be expected that practice times are shared.
